Dear Mr. President:
I am oppossd to the National Day of Prayer. ?I consider a national day of prayer to be unconstitutional. ?Thomas Jefferson said that our nation is for people of all faiths--not just for the religious right. ?We are suppossed to have a separation of church and state. ?The federal and state governments are NOT suppossed to recommend any one religion or creed over any other. ?A national call to prayer is just as unconstitutional as a national call to fast for Ramadan, to observe a Pagan Yule holiday, or to recommend to all Americans to atone for their sins on Yom Kippur, or to call all Americans to practice Voodoo or Santar? ?
Just because Christianity is popular and just because many of Americans subscribe to a religious creed, that does NOT constitute permission for the U.S. government to pass a law calling on the current sitting president to ask the nation to pray!
It is the job for religios people to ask people to pray; it is *NOT* the job of the federal government to ask people to pray. ?Having the president ask people to pray is akin to the president declaring that members of religious groups are better than people who choose not to pray or not to have gods and goddesses in their lives. ?The federal government must *never* recommend that people should pray. ?Keep the government and religion separated; separation ensures the right of all to either not worship any gods at all or to worship however they see fit. ?Separation of church and state guarantees religious freedom for all, as well as the freedom of Atheists and Agnostics to opt out of religious practice.

Stop the National Day of Prayer!
There should NOT be a federal law mandating the president to call Americans to a National Day of Prayer. Let religionists do their own proselytizing; the Separation of Church and State gives everybody the freedom to either choose to pray or to abstain from praying. It's not the job of the federal government to call people to pray!
