I feel there is 3 things that should be considered in a dom control over another All would be under the word safety.
1st Physical..
To start a safe word should be used. A word that is not in normal exchange such as stop, no, and so on. A word obscured such as flower as example. The slave should say this word only when the play is to much for there well being. The person could be afraid to point of nightmares or a physical limit. My thought is that the skin should never be cut, never allowed to bleed, or never have the chance of infection. No Scat, mucus, spit or other such easily transmitted forms should ever reach a open cut. Spankings, disapline and other forms of punishment should be of such a way to teach obediance. Not cripple ones mind or body. Crying is good as a outlet and allowed.
2nd Emotional..
Dom sub play should be just that. PLAY!! One should feel the scare the sting and the stimulation of such play. Yet not be emotionly impaired after the scene has ended.
3rd Social..
Those of us that wish to stay discreet should be respected to do so. Humiliation is fun on the right level. say a hidden object that you thing everyone knows about. When in fact the mind is leading you to believe that and all looks normal to the ones around you. Yet the mind or thought of disclosure can and may stimulate the fear and body responces that acheive a enlighting release.
