I am truly disturbed by the many hate crimes going on in this country right now. I am sure we have all heard about the recent gay teen suicides, the unsuccessful attempt to repeal DADT, the recent beating in the Stonewall Street Inn (which many contend is where the Gay Civil Rights fight BEGAN) and of course the ongoing battle for gay marriage.

This summer I have been privy to several instances. In June I was at lesbian bar with a friend and we had been drinking a fair amount. When she went to the bathroom I stayed at our table when a strange man came over to me and slapped my ass and put his hand on my thigh. He started asking me if I liked that bar and if my favorite color was purple. I was inebriated and totally shocked and said nothing. I shrunk into the corner and started looking around the room for help. He told me to to be afraid and that he just wanted to be my friend. My friend returned and I ran to her and said we had to leave. I cried on the way home feeling embarrassed and furious with myself for not doing anything. When I got home I called the bar to report it and have them keep an eye on the man or at least throw him out. No one answered or ever returned my calls or emails. I then called the police to report the incident. I called 911 to have them connect me to my local precinct and was then transferred to the hospital. When I called back I was transferred several times without reaching the precinct and was then told there was probably nothing they could do anyway. They said if I wanted to make a report I would have to come to the precinct right then - in Washington Heights at 4 am. I of course did not want to leave my house and walk through a neighborhood that gets shady at night especially AFTER being through a frightening event. I later learned I was mislead and I could?ve made a report without having to do that.

Last night my dear friend went to a bar in our neighborhood. He was showing physical signs of affection to the male friend he was with. When he left the bar briefly to make a phone call the bartender assumed he was leaving without paying and called them faggots. This lead to a physical fight in which the young man was strangled and thrown out of the bar. When the police were contacted they did nothing.

Today my 11 year old brother was called a fag at school today by a boy who has been picking on him and teasing him. He spread rumors that my brother got naked with him in bed and tried to go do things. I have always taught my brother to never ever use racial epithets and hate speech about sexuality. He has heard me many times talk about my gay friends and how it is disrespectful, hateful and ignorant to use the word faggot even when he and his friends are just joking around. I have even gone as far as to snap at his friends and tell them not to use that word in front of me. When the kid called him that on the playground my brother popped him in the stomach. My parents were called to the principal?s office to talk about the seriousness of his actions but it is unclear as to whether the other boy will be disciplined.?

This is the 21st century and the past three events I have written about have taken place in New York City and in the San Francisco Bay Area - two hubs of gay culture and gay pride. No matter how enlightened we are or how evolved and equal we think society has gotten we are nowhere near true equality. We CANNOT fight fire with fire anymore. Anger and yelling and threatening will not work. Politicians and hatemongers will cling to ideas of immorality, danger, criminality and perversion. As sickening and frustrating as that can be to hear the only way to fight back is with with LOVE, TOLERANCE and POSITIVITY. This summer I witnessed a man heckling at a gay right?s rally. He was yelling that this was his town and he had a right to what kinds of things were happening.? Most people ignored him but an older woman standing next to him put her arm gently on his shoulder and said, ?Sir we?re your neighbors. We live in this town too.? She was quiet and kind but the look of total warmth and sweetness in her eyes made him quiet down. She quietly answered his questions and explained her position and continued to listen to him and accept his opinions. By the end he was listening to the rally with genuine interest.

The things I hear over and over again are to show the world that being a part of the LGBT(QIA) community does not make you different or wrong or a deviant - we are people! And when we show ourselves to be people of kindness, intelligence, respect and love it makes it very hard for people to argue and hate. When we DO feel anger and frustration I think we have to translate it into doing something productive. Fighting and getting mad and angry blogging and arguing is much easier (and far less productive) than actually taking a stand to make change.

I am posting this here because I know many of us identify as a part of the LGBT(QIA) community (remember A is for Ally!) and I am urging you to take charge and do something in this time of great need.

Check out the following websites to do something! I have started talking to the ACLU and LAMBDA about helping to fight discrimination and take a stand and become an ACTIVE part of this civil rights revolution. If we don?t do anything we can never expect change.
