ROOM 301

It was a somewhat quaint hotel within 5mins or so of Hyde Park with many original Victorian features. At this late hour the entrance hallway was lit only by dimmed gaslight styled wall-lighting which created a sense of gothic romance. My room, 301, was to be found on the 3rd floor......

I walked up two flights of stairs, the squeaking of the floorboards silenced slightly by the plush scarlet carpeting, smiled as I discovered the rather rickety looking spiral staircase which would take me to 3rd floor. I stooped only after bumping my head the 2nd time, and for a moment felt as if my 6ft frame were in a dolls-house.

 Room 301 was the only room on the "3rd floor" and I surmised it would have perhaps been a servant's quarters back in the 19th century . I pushed the 6 inch brass key into the old lock and turned, nothing! I tried again and still nothing! It took both hands twisting on the key before the lock finally submitted and the door creaked and swung inwards.

I threw my bag on the bed, only a single bed but draped in a splendid, scarlet cover. I pressed the dimmer switch on with my thumb and dimmed the candle effect wall-light before pushing the creaky old door shut again. It was a simple but very tastefuly decorated room, scarlet carpet continuing from the stair-landing, complimented by a subtle fleur-de-lis wall-print. The low overhead wooden beams, wonderfully restored, confirmed it was an attic room and more than likely once occupied by a maid or housekeeper. A small roof window gave a view of the east corner of Hyde Park if you stood on the foot-stool and stuck your head out into the night sky. Apart from the bed and foot-stool, the only other furntiture in the room was an old dressing table, complete with mirror, and a leather upholstered armchair. There was something about that chair.

As I unpacked I thought of Giselle, she was the reason for my visit to London, and I suddenly had this picture in my mind of her sitting in that old leather chair, with her lovely, long, smooth legs spread over the narrow arms.....
