After having read the review at http://www.wired.com/underwire/2012/12/hobbit-review/ , I admit I wasn't expecting much from The Hobbit. I saw it in 3D, only way to see box office movies in my humble opinion. I can't say that I was disappointed, because my expectations were a tad on the low side.
I understand Peter Jackson's desires to embellish the story, and he really needs to fluff the movie out to make his 3 movies. To the uninformed non-book reader the movie was pretty good. Lots of action sequences - really keeps you engaged. But not so much to me.
I do say Tom Bombadil was a key part of the story.
He does stay on track, eating the meaty parts of the story, and adding a few fluffy side stories to make the movie longer.
I think about half way through I was hoping for the credits to roll by. Too much embellishment for my tastes.
