If I step outside myself for a moment -and the weather is certainly better out here- I've got to confess my wonderment at the nutty experiences I'm having while stumbling along on this psycho-erotic journey of submission.

I wrapped up a tense off-site discussion with someone last night that's now got me wondering: if I yearn for the experience of submission, does that make me "a sub", as the phrase seems to be understood by the users of this site?

It seems to me there is a submission which extends outward from a person's being (whether the submissive attitude is chosen consciously or not - that's another discussion). But the act isn't aligned with any particular object: this expression of submission is both subject and object, a closed loop. The submission is made formulaically to a domme, a lamppost, a kitten-in-a-tree.. whatever. Yet the recipient is really just a cypher*. (*Although for what or whom, I wonder).

I'm sure my interlocutor last night believed I was a sub in this vein when she seemed flummoxed that I'd dare to disagree (however politely) with her whiny brittle nonsense. She went bananas. And while I didn't then tell her to fuck off, I guess it really came to the same thing.

Anyway, the poor lady's difficulty - it seems to me - is with an underlying attitude formed in the binary of sub-domme. It's a shallow way of thinking that nonetheless I often see embedded in discussions of BDSM and D/s (of which I actually know hilariously little... but this is my journal so tough shit).

In fact, as my own case shows, and the number of those who profess to be "switches" seems to indicate, domme/dom and sub exist on ends a spectrum....as fluid as sexual orientation or appreciation of '80's music. Take my own submissive drive: it's bottled up... highly discriminatory and unable to achieve its aim unless the right "object" is in place to receive it.

Sigh. Where is my old pal Hegel? It's been years. What did he say about the submissive act at the core of our understanding of liberal democracy? I can't remember, but I'm going back to the books to find out.
