Well, I just got back from a play party, and my new flogger is a resounding success! Although I must say, wraparound is one hell of a bitch. Check my pics to see why.

A friend of mine was expressing her disappointment at not having any thuddy floggers. I commiserated with her, and then an idea wormed its way into my skull. Why not just make one? I determined to do so. After thinking about how I'd build it for about a day, I headed out for materials. At a local store that sells sheets of leather, I was able to raid the scrap bin, and walk away with about 15' sq.? for $20. Then I headed over to the Domme Depot and picked up the rest of my needed supplies:
1(one) bolt @ 1/4 " X 2"
1(one) handful of washers
10(ten) 1" oval head phillips screws
1(one) 5' dowel rod with 1" diameter
1(one) metal yardstick
1(one) 2' sq. piece of plywood
Once I got back to my apartment I was able to spread the leather out and cut out a 12" X 25" swath, using the plywood as a cutting surface.? I cut off an 8" section of dowel rod, and smoothed out the edges. This next bit is the only part where power tools were required. The bolt is too thick, and the handle too thin, for this to work without
drilling; if you try to simply torque it straight in, the handle will
split. Using a 3/16" drill bit, I drilled about 1/2" into the end of the dowel rod. Then, after threading the washers onto the bolt, I screwed the bolt onto the end of the handle.
At this point, the handle is ready; next up is the leather prep. I had a piece 12" wide and 25" long. 10" of length would be the handle plus a bit extra, so I had 19" falls to cut. Using the yardstick as a guide, I cut 16 individual falls, each 3/4" wide, for a total of 12".
Now the handle comes back into the picture. The washers on the end act as a counter-weight for the falls. Since it's only screwed in, the bolt can be removed, and the balance adjusted by adding or removing washers. Making sure to place the counter-weight at the end opposite the falls, I rolled the leather around the handle. Finally, using a screwdriver, I drove the 1" screws through the leather and into the handle itself.
Viola! A very serviceable flogger has just appeared. I'm not quite finished; at some point I'm going to pierce the overhang by the butt of the flogger and add a small loop for storage. This is my first homemade toy, and any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!
