I've been involved in this lifestyle for 10 years. In that time, I have been involved in a few 24/7 D/s relationships, as well as less serious ones. I regularly attend events at the local dungeon, and am a frequent participant in the Alt and Bound munches there. These groups are full of really great people and have fantastic leaders, past and present. These and the multitude of other groups in the Dallas are among the many reasons we have such a great bdsm scene here.
I have quite a bit of experience with and enjoy a wide variety of types of play, including floggers, whips, canes, impact play, bondage and suspension, and fire. I have been told I can be quite the sadist at times, but you'll always find a smile on my face during play because I think of play (or "scening" or whatever you prefer to call it) as something that is supposed to be fun. Now, my smile apparently can look quite devilish, but I assure you that it's there because I'm having fun.
As fun as play is, the D/s dynamic is of paramount importance to me. The depth of such relationships is indescribable. Having said that, I'm recently out of such a relationship and not looking to re-enter another in the near future. I'm in a "regroup"/play-only mode and looking to stay that way for quite some time.
On a side note, if you are new to the bdsm world, I encourage you to check out f&e&t&l&i&f&e.com. (Obviously, you need to drop all the "&" from that name.) It has quickly become the central portal for all things kinky, and is especially great for keeping up with the activities of community groups in the "scene." f&e&t is not so much for meet-ups (there are no complex profile search functions), but that keeps the trolls to a minimum. I have the same profile name there as here - come find me. :)
Additional side note for the morbidly curious or bored: I am, in many ways, not what some might consider a "typical" Dom, if such a thing exists. On a daily basis, I'm more likely to be in argyle than leather. My leather jacket only gets worn to the local dungeon, but I have strong opinions about herringbone and houndstooth sports coats. I love cardigans.....especially with elbow patches. My fun transportation is a convertible, not a motorcycle. I'm much more likely to be watching British comedies or listening to the NPR weekend shows than watching sports (though I do enjoy watching football on occassion). My heroes are Condorcet and John Nash. I can't weld, but I can calculate a standard deviation by hand. I love math, but can't do simple sums in my head. I am an uber-nerd, but can't fix a computer and video games usually bore me (I can't stand world of warcraft, for example). I love the sights, sounds and smells of the holiday season more than just about anything. I haven't bought new music since about 1986 and think The Police are the bees' knees. I say things like "bees' knees".......often. I am very comfortable in front of a crowd, but not in it. And I love people, even though most of the time, they think I'm weird (which I am, and I'm happy with that). I haven't met anyone who can fold my shirts more neatly than I can, and I once invited a girl over to wash my dishes for a first date (hey, the relationship lasted more than two years and we remain very good friends, so I don't want to hear it...lol...). Finally, I consider myself more of a mean rat bastard than simple sadist, but mean rat bastard isn't a lifestyle option (my kink is always being dissed, I tell ya).
Final side note: I have a job (that I love and pays decently), a place to live (not my parent's basement), and my own transportation. I am not a convicted felon, kiddie porn distributor, or crack addict. In most outward ways, I appear quite vanilla. Ahhhhhh, the duality!
