"Us" Vs. "Them"

The Ku Klux Klan existed to make America "pure." Pure meant national survival hinged on victory in the struggle between "us" (upstanding, God-fearing, native-born white Protestant Americans) and "them" (everyone else--Negroes, Jews, foreigners and Catholics). Here is a letter dated June 24, 1924 from Ohio businessman Charles D. Levy to President Calvin Coolidge:
"My Dear Mr.President--I have been a staunch Republican for many years, casting my first vote for James A. Garfield. I have 23 Department Stores located throughout the different towns and cities of Ohio. In some of these towns and cities the Ku Klux Klan organization has placed a boycott on several of my stores, on account of me being fortunate enough to be born a Hebrew, and just as soon as the present leases expire I will be compelled to move from these sections. In the town of Ashland,Ohio, where one of my stores is located, there was held a meeting in the Public Square, and in front of thousands of spectators who had gathered to hear the speakers, the Ku Klux Klan openly told the audience they should not patronize any Jewish merchants. I think this is just plain boycott and very unfair to an American citizen or even a Non-American citizen. I have read your platform and taken special notice to the paragraph in which you state that you demand "law and order"and "the protection of all citizens." All I am asking for is your protection in this matter. If you have promised it for the next four years there is no reason why you cannot give it to us now, as you are The President now, of this glorious country, the same as I hope you will be for the next four years. I await your kind reply for which I thank you in advance.Very sincerely"
"Silent" Cal was silent on the subject. At the Republican Convention (which ended a few days before Levy wrote his letter) some delegates tried to insert a plank in the party platform condemning "any organization based on prejudice or discrimination against any citizens for reasons of race, color or creed." The convention quashed the anti-Klan plank. Coolidge did nothing to curb the Klan's actions against Levy.

Never Forget

The Nazi swastika and the Confederate flag were symbols of hate, enslavement and murder. Yet there will always be those who will sanitize history by making them represent something else. Germans said WW II was about onerous reparations demanded from WW I. It was really about enabling the Nazi rise to power, perpetuation of the Aryan "Super" Race and systematic extermination of the Jews. Southerners said the American Civil War was about States rights. It was really about the ideology of white supremacy and the perpetuation of enslaving millions of blacks. No surprise, then, that we see to this day a-holes festooned with both Confederate flag and Nazi helmet. South Carolina started the Civil War by firing shots on federal troops at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. It was the first state to secede from the Union before the Civil War over "increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the Institution of Slavery." Alexander Stephens, vice president of the Confederacy, said: "Our new government foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the Negro is not equal to the white man, that slavery --subordination to the superior race-- is his natural and normal condition." Confederate Col. John S. Mosby, "Gray Ghost of the Confederacy," frustrated later over how history was being distorted and, seeking historical accuracy, wrote, in 1907: "The South went to war on account of slavery." He cited the South Carolina secession proclamation and noted scornfully, "South Carolina ought to know what was the cause for her seceding." Bottom line: The South fought to preserve racial slavery, the North fought to end it. And now the remaining symbols, icons and distortions that would have some remember with nostalgia the racism against blacks must be ended.

History May Not Repeat But It Does Rhyme

As he signed the Johnson-Reed Act into law, Republican President Calvin Coolidge declared "America must be kept American." In 1902 a permanent ban of Chinese laborers into the U.S. was enacted. In 1917, most of Asia was designated a "barred zone" from which immigration was prohibited. In 1921, the first national-origin quota system was adopted, heavily favoring immigrants from northern and western Europe over those from anywhere else. Even more restrictive was the 1924 Johnson-Reed Act which limited immigrants to 165,000 people annually. More than 85 percent of this quota was set aside for northwest Europe and Scandinavia, with far less totals for the rest of the world. Germany's quota was 51,000, for example, while Italy's was less than 4,000 and Egypt's was 100. The Ku Klux Klan was among the Act's most vociferous supporters. And the Women of the Ku Klux Klan, founded in 1923, declared that "the perpetuity of our nation rests upon the solidarity and purity of our native-born, white, Gentile, Protestant men and women." Evidently that was their "MeToo" moment but by 1930 the Women of the KKK had virtually disappeared.  PS: Donald Trump's father, Fred, was reportedly arrested when a fight broke out while he was parading with the KKK in NewYork on Memorial Day, 1927.

Who Are These So-Called Experts?

Now that our "March Madness" basketball brackets are already in shreds, let us turn back to football (oh wait, Go Villanova!). In a ranking of 32 NFL quarterbacks, the Eagles' Nick Foles finished 32! (The Eagles' Carson Wentz came in at No. 5.) Since 1996, Foles has more playoff wins (three) than the Dallas Cowboys (two). And, the still-regarded "underdog" has a Super Bowl ring. Wentz and Foles...I cannot wait for football season to return. Go Eagles! And Happy St. Patrick's Day!

When Mailmen Were Mailmen

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

No mail delivery seems to be happening as frequently these days as school closings. There was a time when paperboys had to pull their wagons full of newspapers block-to-block, house-to-house in all kinds of weather, six days a week. They would have but two days off: Christmas and The Fourth of July. There was also a time when mailmen delivered twice-a-day, six days a week. Men were men and boys were real boys. I am not a Luddite, gizmos are great, but we have lost something precious.

The Republican Tax Cut Will Come Back to Bite Us in the Ass

Snapshot on the $1.5 trillion tax cut/deficit increase: Fourth-quarter GDP came in at a ho-hum 2.5%. The 4% to 5% projections are a pipedream which will mean higher interest on the debt. Early indications are that corporations are applying their tax-cut windfalls to stock buybacks rather than to new investment. Health care premiums continue to rise. Drug prices continue to rise. State and local taxes, fees and tolls are rising to offset Federal cuts. A Fed tax increase on gasoline is being proposed. Mortgage rates are rising. And, an expensive trade war may be looming. Even those on Social Security are being tapped to help pay for the tax cuts.Tucked into the bill is a change in the consumer price index (CPI) calculation. A new formula, Chained CPI, will be used and it takes into account the economic principle of "substitution," meaning consumers are likely to switch to less expensive goods or services when others become too costly. The tax act would change over to this new method beginning in 2023 and will likely result in lower or no COLA increases. Enjoy the "fly now, pay later" tax cut!

Valentine's Day Massacre

Once again: A mass slaying, this time at a Florida high school, involving the use of military-type weapons and ammunition. Seventeen dead and 15 wounded. Behind this slaughter is the usual cast of characters: NRA nimrods, money-grubbing death merchants, law-enforcement and social media who cease to connect the dots, do-nothing Republicants and dim-bulb "guardians" opening their home for a troubled teen to bring in an AR-15 weapon. Politicians will spew the same BS: "Our children should not have to go through this." Well do something about it, you worthless bastards!!!

The Greatest Pro Football Game Ever!
New England Patriots: Toppled!                        Philadelphia Eagles:  Top Dogs!

Eagles Win Their First Super Bowl Championship -- Beat Patriots 41 to 33

More yards were amassed in this game than in any pro football game ever played, regular or post season! The greatest quarterback, Tom Brady, threw for over 500 yards and lost! The Eagles quarterback, Nick Foles, even caught a touchdown pass! Vegas had the Eagles as 4-1/2 point underdogs. Sports Illustrated had the Eagles losing 26 to16. Eagles coach Doug Pederson was so"highly regarded" that he received only one vote for "Coach of the Year." Btw, shed no tears for the Patriots (as if we could) their three playoff games their offense was called for a total of one five-yard penalty. Fly Eagles Fly!

An Embarrassment of Riches

The deficit-funded, permanent tax cuts lavished on corporations by the Republicants are so generous that companies have felt compelled to share some crumbs with their employees. For example, one-time, one-thousand dollar bonuses (before taxes) are to be given to Walmart and Home Depot employees who have 20 or more years of service. Expect the Republicants to claw back the deficit-funded tax cuts later by going after entitlements. Meanwhile, the "little people" are soooo happy that Trump has put money in their pockets. Some folks can be bought for a billion and some for a buck.

Windfalls to the Wealthiest Americans and Growing Wage Disparity

In the U.S., the bottom 90% received about 62% of total income as recently as 1992. In a 2016 Federal Reserve survey, only 49.7% of total income went to the bottom 90%. Drop in homeownership went from 69% in 2004 to under 64% in 2016. As the bottom 90% of workers become poorer, they are less able to pay taxes and will have lower purchasing power. The government then cannot collect enough tax revenue. Republican legislation to reduce taxes, especially for businesses and high-income individuals, is likely to increase after-tax wage disparity and will add significantly to the deficit. If corporations choose to return any of the benefit of the tax cut, it will likely be through stock buybacks and for dividends to those who are already wealthy. As for corporate tax rates, the U.S. is only trying to catch up with tax havens, so the tax change will not result in much more investment. The 35% Federal corporate tax rate is a myth anyway. Corporations rarely pay the top tax rate. In a study of 258 U.S. corporations, over the 2008 to 2015 period, the average tax paid was 21%. Now, with a proposed tax reduction to 20%, the tax avoidance bar can be lowered even further.

Remembering Sgt. John R. Rice this Veterans Day (11/11)

Sgt. John R. Rice, a decorated veteran of World War II, was killed on a Korean battlefield in 1950. His body was later shipped home for burial in Sioux City, Iowa, where his widow had bought a plot in Memorial Park Cemetery. At the funeral, a cemetery official grew suspicious when he noticed the large number of Native Americans present. Told that the dead man was part Indian, he informed the Rice family that Memorial Park had a "Caucasians only" policy and Sergeant Rice would have to be buried elsewhere. The cemetery later insisted that its policy existed "not because of any prejudice against any race, but because people, like animals, prefer to be with their own kind." Word of the incident soon reached the White House. An angry President Truman offered to bury Sergeant Rice in Arlington National Cemetery. On September 5, 1951, Sergeant Rice was laid to rest in the hallowed ground of Arlington with full military honors.

Eagles Beat the "Virgin Mary"

The Carolina Panthers played a football game last night that was near "immaculate." However, a miracle happened in Charlotte, NC at the NFL Thursday Night Game as the Philadelphia Eagles beat the immaculate-deception Panthers anyway. The referees called 10 penalties on the Eagles for 126 yards. They called one penalty on the Panthers for one yard. In the history of NFL games played there has never been such a disparity in penalties called. Even the one penalty called on the Panthers was not without controversy as the refs failed to inform the Eagles coach of the option to move the ball half the distance to the goal line (one yard) or tack five yards onto the kickoff. The refs decided on their own to tack the five yards onto the Eagles kickoff. It was the Eagles coach who had to inform them he wanted the ball on the one-yard line where it was then spotted and the Eagles successfully made a key two-point conversion. In the end, the Eagles defeated the pure-as-the-driven-snow, squeaky-clean Panthers--and the officials--28-23. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

While we wait for the gun guys to compose their latest anti-gun-control statements, allow me to get out my word kit and modify a previous NRA statement to:
"It takes a good guy with a gun to stop a bad guy with semi- and fully-automatic weapons."
Give it a few days and this, too, shall pass. Things will return to "normal." The U.S. makes up five percent of world population and 30% of its mass murders. What is so maddening is that this carnage could have been prevented and that it could happen again and again.

That comment certainly clarifies why President Trump spent this past weekend tweeting 23 times about NFL players taking a knee and tweeting six times about the destruction to Puerto Rico. Trump's Moral Equivalency: "There were bad dudes on both sides."

He implied it in defense of Putin (the CIA) and he said it in defense of white supremacists (Liberals). Were he president during the "era of lynching" he probably would have said something similar, whereas the morally bankrupt presidents at the time merely remained silent. A 1930 study by the Commission of Interracial Cooperation reported that 3,724 people had been lynched since 1889. More than four-fifths of the victims were African Americans. Of the thousands of people who carried out or witnessed these killings only 49 were indicted; of those, only four were actually sentenced. Letters in the files of the National Archives, which had been received at the White House, implored Presidents McKinley, Harding and Hoover to do something. They went unanswered. Here is one example from 1899, addressed to the Hon. Wm. McKinley, President of the U.S. : "The leaders in the mob that killed 20 colored men in April '99 in Little River Co  Ark were John Sanders, Jim Sanders, Eli Britt, John Hawkins. Colored men forced to assist were Elias Coons, Dave Rex. After they killed the men the mob forced their wives and daughters to yield to their beastly desires, then beat them and some of them died from the effect of the cruel treatment. Please if possible do something for me. -- Henry Johnson, Argenta, Ark,  P.S. Please answer soon and let me know what to do about it."

Little grade-school rat Jeff Sessions looked pleased with himself announcing that the 800,000 young "dreamers," brought illegally into the U.S. (through no fault of their own) can soon be deported unless Congress enacts a law otherwise. The Nut Doesn't Fall Far From the Tree

On Memorial Day in 1927, 1000 white-robed Klansmen of the Ku Klux Klan marched in Queens, NY to protest, according to their flyers, that "Native-born Protestant Americans" were being assaulted by Roman Catholic police of New York City. Fred Trump (father of Donald Trump) was one of seven men who were arrested after a brawl that day "on a charge of refusing to disperse from a parade when ordered to do so." All seven men arrested were declared to be wearing Klan attire, according to several sources. Fred Trump was detained and released.

The right to want to incite another civil war? Yes, lives were spent giving us the freedom to assemble but lives were spent defending this country from slavery, secession and frickin Nazi Germany! The White Supremacist President

President Trump had his defining moment to condemn symbols and acts of racism and bigotry in Charlottesville, Virginia and he failed to do so. Instead, he showed his true color: white only. He is one of "them." He is enabler-in-chief and sympathizer of white supremacists, Nazis, KKK, Confederates, assorted trucker-hat torch bearers and the Alt-Right. In other words, his "base." Trump is not president of all the people. He is president of mostly a racist minority. As KKK A-hole David Duke said, "We can do this because of Trump." To the good people of Virginia: Please take down the Lee statue.

Flashback: The Last Time Republicants Got Their Hands On Healthcare

Ah, yes, the wonder years of "Bush the Younger." Back in 2003, Big Pharma, and its legion of lobbyists, pushed successfully for a revision to Medicare, the American health insurance program for people 65 and older. This included a new drug benefit but with no measures to control the costs of that benefit through means testing or bulk buying. Medicare was not allowed to negotiate prices, while drug companies were free to raise prices indiscriminately. The resulting benefit to drug makers since the drug plan began is estimated at well over a quarter-trillion dollars. Just an early example of how Republicants helped to make healthcare affordable.

White House and the Seven Dwarfs

What do Roger Stone, Carter Page, Paul Manafort, Michael Flynn, Jeff Sessions, Jared Kushner and Donald Trump, Jr. have in common? Each denied or did not disclose having contact with the Russians during the Donald Trump presidential campaign when, in fact, they did. And the president himself continues his "mystifying" bromance with Putin, downplaying the Russian involvement in interfering in the U.S. presidential election, discrediting his own intelligence agencies and wanting to roll back sanctions. We are now looking at the probability of intent to collude and collusion and the possibility of conspiracy, perjury and treason. Meantime, Republicants, putting Republican before Republic, remain muted.

The Mean Team

Republican Dilemma: How to dismantle the ACA, divvy up the spoils and not look mean doing it. The House Republicans brought forth and voted for a steamy turd that was applauded by President Trump. Americans, however, smelled it for what it was and the Prez then called it "mean," while throwing House members under the bus. Then Trump said the Senate would craft a most wonderful revision. A panel of select male-only Senators, hidden behind closed doors, tweaked the mean and delivered yet another steamy turd. Many of their fellow Senate Republicans thought it too mean or not mean enough and the vote was pulled. Impatient Trump then weighed in to say, "...repeal Obamacare now and replace it later," showing he could be mean and STOOPID. Second-or-third-richest-American Warren Buffett said he, and many other rich guys, will receive huge chunks of cash in tax cuts from the Republicans health care plan. Medicaid will be gutted, 22 million will lose coverage and Democrats will be excluded from the process. Happy July 4th, America! Be sure to heap "praise" on your representatives over the holiday.

Remember the "Me" Generation? Greed is good. He who dies with the most toys wins. Those were the days my friend. We thought they would never end. Well, they did not. The seven deadly sins will always be with us. What is no longer with us are God and Heaven. No real loss as they were created to keep the little people ignorant, under control and hopeful. Always hopeful. Good vs. Evil. If the evil could not be defeated on earth, God would punish the evildoers. And those who suffered would be rewarded in heaven. It was a nice business model for organized religions. For a long time religions ruled but ultimately the secular world prevailed. Satan, in the form of snake, would lose out to snake oil, in the form of buyer beware. And here we are now. The "Me" Generation has morphed into the "Mean" Generation. The absence of a powerful good has made possible an extraordinary shift of wealth to the top. Greed is good is now on steroids. Take from the poor and give to the rich. The  rubes who voted for Trump think the poor are taking their stuff. The rubes want to live like Trump, they want to be Trump and Trump has a bridge to sell them. In fact, they bought the bridge in the form of a wall. Rubes see their problems as coming up from beneath them and not from above them. They are Trump wannabees who Trump sees as part of the great unwashed to be conned and exploited. They will gleefully and stupidly sever their own safety nets put in place by courageous unions who helped lift their standard of living. They will gleefully and stupidly allow their fellow Americans healthcare to be taken from them. Why? Does their self-esteem derive from the suffering of others? Are they devoid of humanity? Is it really about greed? Is it really about the most toys? They cannot take it with them--although they can keep it from others--but what have they won?

And the Domestic Violence "Winner" Is...

Proportionately more women are killed by men in South Carolina than in any other state. (Note to self: Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there.) Also, gun-related deaths are more prevalent in the Southern states, with six of these states having gun-death rates of 19%. Nationally, 41% of households own guns and more people die from guns than from car accidents. There is still no ban of assault weapons nor an expansion of background checks to mental-health outpatients and domestic abusers. Firearms now number almost as many as there are people in the U.S. The main reason people own guns: "protection." The irony: 60% of the deaths are suicides.

Comey Speaks

Three takeaways from the testimony of fired "nut job" FBI Director James Comey before the Senate Intelligence Committee on 6/8/17:
1) President Donald Trump is a liar, according to Comey. (No big surprise to us there.)
2) Most believe the Russians interfered in the U.S. Election with the exception of Putin and Comrade Trump.
3) Senator John McCain shit his pants trying to articulate a "gotcha" question for Comey.

Duty, Honor, Sacrifice, Accomplishment

On Memorial Day (5/29) we remember and honor all Americans who served in the military and made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom, family, America and her allies. This Memorial Day, I am also mindful of the paternal line of able-bodied Trumps who never served and the in-laws who never served. They are Donald Trump grandfather, Frederick, father, Fred, Donald himself, son, Donald, Jr. and son, Eric. They are father-in-law, Charles Kushner and son-in-law, Jared Kushner. These "I built that!" poseurs owe their lives and fortunes to the American heroes we honor this day. Blessings on all families who have suffered the loss of a loved one in the service of this great country.

Monuments of Slavery, Disunion, Andersonville and Assassination

In July 1776 American colonials at the Bowling Green in New York pulled down a statue of King George III and melted the lead into bullets to be fired at the British. Were that today the statues being removed in New Orleans could be melted into bullets and aimed at the KKK. Instead, they are to be afforded the respect of a museum resting place. This is a sad day for garden-gnome U.S. Attorney General Jefferson Beauregard Sessions. His namesakes, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Confederate General Beauregard, are among the statuary being removed from their pedestals. Ironically, those doing the removal have had to cover their faces so that latter-day Confederates do not find out who they are and burn crosses on their lawns. Haters gotta hate but freedom marches on.

Sanctuary and Defiance

The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 compelled Northerners to help capture anyone thought to be a fugitive slave. It sparked abolitionist activism. Now, pint-sized Grand Wizard of the Justice Department Jefferson Beauregard Sessions has issued his edict to "Sanctuary Cities" to rat out and help return "runaway" illegal immigrants to Federal authorities or risk losing Federal funding. Abolitionist Jermain Loguen, from Syracuse, N.Y., wrote of the Act, "It outlaws me and I outlaw it." Expect similar defiance from the Sanctuary Cities.

On Free Will, Destiny, Fate & Inevitability

This arabic gem, excerpted from a play Sheppey (1933) by W. Somerset Maugham, was the title source for Appointment in Samarra (1934) by John O'Hara --

There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture; now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.

American Health Care Act
Born: February, 2017     Died: March, 2017

House Republicants battled over degrees of mean and in the end the Affordable Care Act remains the law of the land. Trump's budget guy, Mularkey, or whatever his name is, "reasoned" that it was necessary to cut the "Meals On Wheels" program from the budget because it is not working. The same food recipients need food again and again, so why continue with a failed program? Better to teach the downtrodden and indigent how to fish, than to give them a fish and then another fish. Fishes add up. Trump needs that money for a) the military and b) tax cuts for the rich. God has a special place in hell for Republicans like these.

This St. Patrick's Day (March 17)--Remembering the Irish in the Nation's Founding

Commodore John Barry, the father of the American Navy, traveled to the U.S. from County Wexford. John Dunlap, the official printer of the Continental Congress, was born in County Tyrone. Eight Irish Americans counted themselves as signers of the Declaration of Independence. Of the foreigh-born delegates who met in Philadelphia for the Constitutional Convention, fully half hailed from Ireland. A third of all the immigrants to the U.S. from 1820 to the outbreak of the Civil War called Ireland home. They were not always welcomed. "We should build a wall of brass around the country," bellowed John Jay, the first chief justice of the U.S., to keep out these "Catholic alien invaders." In political cartoons, Irish were portrayed as drunken, brutish, and-- as Catholics --blind subjects of the Pope. Of all the groups the Know-Nothing Party despised, it reserved especial vitriol for the Irish. In spite of hardships, the Irish overwhelmingly answered the call of the Union Army following the outbreak of the Civil War. More than 150,000 Irish and Irish Americans would fight for the Union as would 177,000 blacks. They fought to prevent the Union's dissolution and they fought to abolish slavery. Rubes Go Gaga For Trump's Softer-Toned Speech
He put lipstick on his pig but it is still a pig. The public loved it and the press backed off. Oh what a night. But the proof of the pig is the taste thereof. And there will be lots of bitterness to come. There is too much to cover so I'll pick just these. The Wall: He is going ahead with it but he was silent on who is paying for it. My guess is the American taxpayer. The Failed Mission: He called it a success and in his magnanimity gave all the "credit" to his generals, especially "the Great General Mattis." It was a gentler way of throwing them under the bus. The Exploitation: Milking all the pathos he could get from the widow of the Navy Seal killed during the failed mission. Of the million and more of our veterans killed in action was any of them so honored? And what was the dead soldier's father thinking? And what about the two dozen innocent civilians who were killed? This is why I so hate phony politicians. So here he is folks, the new Trump...a pig in sheep's clothing. And we like him! We really like him!

Out of a population of only 3,929,000 was brought forth the first and arguably the greatest president. Out of a population of 323,000,000 was brought forth the 45th president who shall not be named in the same sentence as George Washington. From first to worst.

It's in the Genes: You Go Fight While We Stay Behind and Make Money

Friedrich Trump left Germany for the U.S. in 1885, at the age of 16, without leaving behind a security deposit with the government to ensure he would return for compulsory military service. Twenty years later, when he turned his back on the U.S. to get back to Germany, he was discovered to be a scofflaw and ordered out. He appealed his expulsion and it was denied. He was considered a service-dodger. He made his way back to the U.S. where he never served here either. Trump males have avoided military service for 130 years and counting.

Spanish-American War: nope. World War I: nope. World War II: nope. Korean Conflict: nope. Vietnam: nope. Iraq and Afghanistan: nope. To all the Trumps--"Thank you for your service."

Liar, Liar, Wish Your Pants Were on Fire

Pussy-groper, Putin-poodle and President Donald J. Trump is not delusional, he is a liar. He lied about President Obama not being a U.S. citizen. He lied about how many jobs would be saved by the Carrier deal. He lied about the crowd size at the National Mall. He lied about thousands of real jobs being created by the pipelines when only 50 full-time, non temp jobs will be created. And he sent Press Secretary Sean Spicer out for a press briefing where Sean did a Ralph Kramden humida humida to defend Trump's lie about winning the popular vote because millions voted illegally for Clinton. This guy is an unabashed, bold-face liar. One last thing: Hillary won the popular vote by 2.9 million more votes. Get over it, Trump!!

1/18/2017 5:37:12 AM
Empty Seats, Empty Words

Trump said it would be the biggest inaugural crowd in history, a million or a million and a half. Instead half the National Mall was empty as he poured out 16 minutes of bombast, bile and bullshit. The Womens March the next day overflowed the entire Mall. So upset was Trump, he had Sean Spicer call a press conference solely to berate the press for lying about the size of the crowd. This was an act right out of the Bannon/Nazi playbook. Anyway, now I want to dish about the women, two women actually. Did Mrs. Pence look like she was dropped from a Conestoga wagon and headed to a potluck dinner? Does she smile? Does she speak? Does she always ask permission? And then there is First Lady Melania, a poseur who can't seem to pry her lips apart. She is the trophy replacement for all those trucker hats still pining for Sarah Palin. Oh well, I know I was taught to go high when they go low but, screw it, we've entered the Era of Crass.

Two States Forward and One Back

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Nittyyahoo, land-grabber extraordinaire and politically to the right of Genghis Khan, has told U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to butt out of "Israeli affairs." On the other hand, as they say in Fiddler on the Roof, he gladly accepts the $38 billion welfare check from the U.S. Never mind that earlier Benny went around the U.S. president to butt into "U.S. affairs" before Congress. Never mind that the illegal settlements on the West Bank continue unabated. Perhaps the incoming president, Donald Trump, who is going to peddle "insurance protection" to NATO members, ought to insist on a "pound of flesh" from his Jewish-state ally.

Electoral College Favors Republicans

There have been only four presidential elections in U.S. history where the candidate who lost the popular vote won the majority of electoral votes. In every case, a Republican was declared the winner: 1876 Rutherford B. Hayes (R) over Samuel J. Tilden (D); 1888 Benjamin Harrison (R) over Grover Cleveland (D); 2000 George W. Bush (R) over Al Gore (D); and, 2016 Donald Trump (R) over Hillary Clinton (D). What we have here is tyranny of the minority (Republicans) over the majority (Democrats).

12/19/2016 5:03:23 AM
Largest Winning Margin Ever by a Losing Presidential Candidate

Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 48% to 46% over Donald Trump. Two million, nine-hundred thousand more votes were cast for Clinton than for Trump. We can talk all we want about a representative democracy and the Electoral College but, should this persist, it will destroy confidence in our political system.

Person of the Year: Kremlin's Donald Trump

The U.S. president-elect actually encouraged Russia to hack the Democrats. It is a moment that will live in infamy. And now joining the commies, like the cockroaches they are, Nazis and Confederates are coming out of the woodwork. This brings to mind the greatest First Lady, Eleanor Roosevelt. She fought against racism, bigotry and social injustice. She fought for the Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. She opposed the internment camps for Japanese-Americans. She fought for labor. She fought Southern lawmakers adamantly opposed to anti-lynching legislation. There is a story of an African-American soldier eating an ice-cream cone in a segregated canteen. Suddenly he finds himself confronted by Mrs. Roosevelt, in the midst of a grinding 25,000-mile tour of wartime outposts in the Pacific. "May I have some of that ice cream?" she asks. After helping herself to a big bite, she returns the cone to its rightful owner. "You see," she tells him with a grin, "that didn't hurt at all, did it?" God bless her. Eleanor made America great, not Trump.

11/23/2016 5:50:19 AM
The Irrelevants

George W. Bush lost the popular vote to Al Gore by 500,000 votes and went on to give us the Iraq War and The Great Recession. Donald Trump lost the popular vote by four times as much: 2,000,000 votes. Just exactly how much is 2,000,000? Picture AT&T Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys football team, which holds about 100,000 spectators. Now visualize 20 of these fully-packed stadiums. This is what 2,000,000 more Democratic votes than Republican votes looks like. This is what losing looks like. And this is what's wrong with the picture.
Update as of 12/23/16: Clinton's lead in the popular vote is now up to 2,900,000. If you're keeping score that's now 29 stadiums.

...Over Over There

The morning of November 11, Battery D was firing again when, at about 8:30, Captain Harry Truman was notified by headquarters that in exactly two and a half hours at 11:00 a.m. -- the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month -- the Germans would sign an armistice agreement. "My battery fired the assigned barrages at the times specified," Harry wrote."The last was toward a little village called Hermeville....My last shot was fired at 10:45. When the firing ceased all along the front line it was so quiet it made me feel as if I'd been suddenly deprived of my ability to hear. The men at the guns, the Captain, the Lieutenants, the sergeants and corporals looked at each other for some time and then a great cheer arose all along the line. We could hear the men in the infantry a thousand meters in front raising holy hell. The French battery behind our position were dancing, shouting and waving bottles of wine....Celebration at the front went on the rest of the day and far into the night. Pistols, rockets and whatever else was handy were fired. I went to bed about ten p.m. but the members of the French Battery insisted on marching around my cot and shaking hands. They'd shout 'Vive le Capitaine Americain, vive le President Wilson,' take another swig from their wine bottles and do it over. It was 2 a.m. before I could sleep at all." The Great War was over.... --David McCullough
