For the men:
"What brings you here?" Not a good way to open conversation, because the answer is... same thing that brings everyone else, I would imagine.

Playing 20 questions. I understand it's a getting to know you phase, but a better approach is a give and take, and open questions that can lead into a mutual dialogue. You ask too many questions in a steady stream, and a gal starts to feel like she's on the witness stand.
Conversely, just talking about yourself. "I do this, and this, and a little of that..."
That's nice, but it seems like you're really saying "Look how great I am! Really, look at me, LOOK AT ME I AM AWESOME!"
I understand it's a pretty competitive market, and the need to peacock can come out, but the first five minutes of conversation is not the place to do it. Makes a gal wonder, if he's so great, he really doesn't need me around, or anyone else for that matter. Not all women are drawn to your money, or your success or whatever else you think you need to flaunt. I would much rather know that you are a kind and decent human being.
