I was brought up being TOLD that women were equal to men in all things. My parents raised me to be a fiercely independent, strong-willed, and outspoken woman. At the same time they taught me that mindset, I watched my mother submit to my father in all things (except general conversations). She washed his clothes, kept the house, ran errands...the whole enchilada. All he had to do was go to work, come home, and make sure the vehicles were taken care of. Their double-sided lessons gave me a simultaneous need for independence and submission. It's infuriating. How can I long to kneel at a man's feet, and yet despise it when he tells me I can't go to the grocery store right now because he needs me to do something else instead?

Note: I actually DO think women are equal to men in the sense that we each have our own place. A man's place is not BETTER than a woman's, but it's not the SAME place. We each have our own strengths that compliment each other.
