The followers of Dionysus, the God of wine, vegetation and vertility and Pan, the sheperd God of woods and pastures, were denizens of the mountains and forests; sileni, satyrs, nymphs and maenads. Satyrs were half-man and half animal; creatures who were freely wandering, under the influence of music, wine, dancing and lust . The female worshippers were the nymphs, maenads, bacchantes of thyiads, all with a strong sexual undercurrent if not overtly displayed.

The Dionysian mysteries, the second most important Hellenistic cult, centred on Dionysus or Bachus, the horned bull-God of Thracian origin and the ruler of the souls of the dead. Who later became the god of wine,vegetation and vertility. Followers believed that immortality could be obtained through communion with the God during ecstatic rites involving consumption of wine, (roosted) flesh of a sacrificed animal and indulging in various kinds of wild sexual behaviour.
