Afterglow
Two figures as one
lie in moonlight
falling through the open window.
Our bodies alabaster sculpture,
in the blue light,
surrounded by a sea
of rippled bedding.
The only sounds now
are the trill of crickets
and our breathing,
again soft and measured.
The satisfactions in making love
with you,
whether in frantic animal lust,
or a leisurely climb
to the pinnacle,
taking pleasure along the way
in all the nuances of love,
are great.
The ecstasy in the final release
from all but our bodies demands,
the explosion of our passions within you,
and returning to the here-now,
becomes overwhelming.
But it is the afterglow,
when animal passions
again become love between a man and a woman,
when words are soft and whispered,
when touch is tender and caressing,
that most I remember and enjoy.
The velvet moments
when two souls are one
and in need of nothing else.
