As a rule I'm not a big fan of advice columnists, there's seldom much new ground and inherently they're in a position that forces them to give advice without all the specifics. Still, sometimes they write on some interesting subjects and recently Cary Tennis of www.salon.com wrote one of the hottest things I've read in such a venue;

Some of what we try will succeed, some will fail, but as long as we continue trying to learn from each and every experience in our lives we will succeed in the end.

Big trouble starts when we object that real life is messy, inconvenient, and annoying compared to what we find online. Of course it is. That's what makes it real...and fulfilling...and worth all the messiness.

Some people feel that being able to say you've "always known" that you were Dominant or submissive is the mark of someone who belongs in the lifestyle, otherwise you're probably trying to pretend that you're something you're not. It's a valid way of looking at things, but depending on how you approach the question it might be a way of determining who's been in the scene for a long time. I'd like to suggest at least considering the question "looking back on your life, were there fantasies or favorite experiences that you now realize were D/s in nature, whether or not you knew it at the time?" Through my own exploration I've realized that the vanilla world is loaded with situations and symbolism that have strong BDSM undertones, whether or not we see it. That tells me there are a lot of people out there that have a piece of themselves that goes totally unexamined.
