I have been thinking a lot lately about identity. How easily we say, "I'm a Dom, I'm sub, I'm a slave, I'm a Master," or some other label: switch, painslut, masochist, sadist. It's as if these things were realities separate from us, or set in some sexual genetics. I wonder about this. I wonder if many of them are any more substantial than a Lego castle. This question started out as a way to invite some discussion, knowing it would annoy some people but it's become more and more interesting to me: is a Dom without a sub a Dom? Do these things exist apart from the relationships in which we experience the dynamic?

Sometimes you look at the Christmas decorations that you've kept up because Christmas was fun, joyful, and joy is so rare, and you realize: they're really just plastic and glass and bits of wood and paint. And it's time to put them away.
