This is a complete rewrite of how to make a closet glory hole.  I?ve simplified the instructions.

First, measure the closet door width, run a tape measure down the entire length to find the narrowest point in the door.  Normally the door will be the same width all the way down but you want to verify this.  Subtract ¼? from the narrowest width ? I will be referring to this as door width.

Second, measure the closet door height on both the hinge side and the knob side of the door and record the smaller number ? I will be referring to this as door height.

Third, there is a set of boards that run around the inside of the closet frame and prevent the door from going past a closed position ? these are called door stops.  Measure how much of the frame extends past the inside edge of the door stop ? on my door it is 1 ¾?.  Take this number and subtract ??.  The ?? will be the channel you will be making.  Again for my door the number I get is 1 ¾? less ?? equals ??.  This is good because I?ll be able to use ½? x ¾? stock to make the channels.  If the number you get is less than ¾? then you will need to use ½? x ½? stock.

The instructions I give will be for a glory hole set at 30 ½? above the floor and 6? wide by 6? high.

You will need to buy ½? x ¾? stock in four pieces ? 2 pieces that are 8? less than the door height, and 2 pieces that are door width (remember door width is actual door width less ¼?).

For an 80? door you will also need 11 or 12 pieces of 1? x 6? lumber (generally whitewood or pine is the least expensive) that are door width.

You will also need 2 pieces of 1? x 6? lumber that are 6? long, and two pieces that are calculated as follows:  Take the door width and subtract 18?, now take the number you get and divide it in two.  For my 30? x 80? door the calculation would be 30? ? ¼? ? 18? = 11 ¾?, 11 ¾? divided by 2 = 5 ??.

In summary, for my 30x80 door ? my lumber is: ½? x ¾? 2 pieces each 72? and 2 pieces each 29 ¾? and 1?x6? 12 pieces that are 29 ¾?, 2 pieces that are 6?, and 2 pieces that are 5 ??.

You will also need some finish nails that are not more than 1? long (they could be 1 ¼? if you like) and a nail set.

Finally you will need 4 band-aids that are no wider than ½? (trim them if you need to).

To put this all together, take one of the shorter ½? x ¾? and place band aids on each end on the ½? sides, these act as little cushions to give a little extra wiggle room.

Now, tack the board onto the side door frame with two of the band-aids pressed lightly against the door stop and the board slid all the way to the top of the frame ? you will only need one nail and don?t drive it all the way in.

Take one of the 72? boards and put it against the door frame, resting on the floor and running up the inside of the door frame, press this lightly towards the board you just tacked in place.  Place a finishing nail about 1? down from the top of the 72? board and drive it most, but not all the way in.

Remove the spacer board, slide it to the bottom of the frame, and tack the bottom of the 72? board in place.  You should be able to take any of the other boards and run them easily up and down the channel you just made.  If the spacing is correct go ahead and put nails in about every 12? but don?t drive them all the way in.

Repeat the process on the other side of the door frame.  You should now have two channels, one on each side of the door frame starting 8? below the top of the frame and running continuously down to the bottom of the frame.

Slide 5 of the 1? x 6? boards into the channels, letting them rest on the floor, one above the next.

Put a band-aid on the door frame just above the stack of wood.  Place the calculated lengths (5 ?? in my example) on top of the stack of boards with the smooth sides on the top and bottom.  Place one of the short pieces of ½? x ¾? on top of this piece so the two cut edges are flush with each other and the stock width and board widths are the same.  Tap in two finishing nails.  Do the same thing with the other calculated board on the other side, next to the frame ? remember to put in the band-aid.

Gently lift the assembly you just made out of the channels, turn it over and run it back down the channels.  Take the band-aids off the other short piece of ½? x ¾? stock and place it on top of the assembly with the two cut edges flush on each side and nail in place with two finishing nails.

You now have the two calculated pieces held together and separated by 18?.  Take one of the 6? lengths of 1? x 6? and slide it in next to one of the calculated pieces so that the smooth edge of the 6? piece is next to the cut edge of the calculated piece.  Attach with two finishing nails.  Repeat with the second 6? piece.

Again, gently slide the assembly up and out, turn it over and slide it back down so that you can put four more finishing nails in ? two into each of the 6? pieces.  This final assembly should be the door width (less the ¼?) and have a 6? x 6? square hole in the center.

Now slide the remaining 1? x 6? pieces into the channels on top of the glory hole to see that they all fit.  You may or may not want to have a 6? ? 8? gap at the top.

If everything is working, take the pieces out of the channels, remove all the band-aids, and drive in any protruding finishing nails using the nail set.

Upgrade 1:  Get two handles that are less than 6? from end to end as well as shallower than the depth of the door stop, mount them on one of the boards for something to hold onto while you are using the glory hole.

Upgrade 2:  Replace the inside door knob with a spacer of some sort so that the door knob does not protrude into the closet.

Upgrade 3:  Drill a hole in the center of the bottom board so that you can run a cord from a ball stretcher, through the hole and up to a good height for you and thus give the slave inside some ?encouragement?

Upgrade 4:  Attach a locking device so that the slave cannot take apart the glory hole unless you have unlocked it ? this can range from a simple padlock on each side of the top board to something more artistic.
