I am a college educated 30 year old who is very interested in the mental and philosophical aspects of the D/s lifestyle. I fall in the camp that considers the sexual elements to be a minor and superficial facet of BDSM. I also differ in my definition of sadism, where I do not count beating the shit out of somebody to be sadistic, but rather getting into the minds of the sub without even laying a single finger on them to be sadistic. True Dominion over somebody occurs when the Dom becomes a natural extension of their life; when they no longer are 'haunted' by thoughts of their Dom, but rather find that every thought they have organically includes their Dom.
