My Middle eastern Easter journey continues, Belinda and I are having so much fun, thanks for paying for it dad, hard to believe my gap year is almost over, miss Darwin already, heading to Dads abode in Paris, where I will have to decide my future, how scarey.
Not possible to arrive here b4 peace summit so spent extra time in Syria / Jordan and will leave for Egypt tomorrow. Alas, I fear Moses might have had an easier time crossing the Red Sea without the intrigues of Egyptian immigration channels I'm expecting following tomorrow's ferry ride to Nuweiba.
Arrived here after overnight stay in the desert in Wadi Rum and tramping around Petra. Watched massive explosion over bkfast in Amman that killed 12. A little concerned about terrorist activity in Middle Egypt (Bw Cairo and Luxor) that could upset plans yet. Absolutely no problem in Syria - even managed a trip to Beirut.
If St Paul was attracted by the depravity of Antoich, then he wouldn't have been disappointed with modern Antakya (which is still shown as Syrian territory on Syrian maps). Left immediately and got a taxi at dusk to whip us over the border and into Aleppo. Took dinner in the Baron Hotel, like Agatha Christie and TE Lawrence before us in the style reminiscent of an old English boarding school. So many fond memories of my 8 years in boarding school
Headed out on the road to Baghdad into the desert to see what is probably the most extraordinary site of Antiquity - Palmyra...an oasis of ruins overlooked by an Arab fort. Spectacular pics.
Of course, nothing could keep me from the great Krak de Chevallier - the finest Crusader Castle ever built. Went through Misayaf on the way to visit the Assasins Castle - the base for 12th century terrorist cells and the forerunners to Al Qeada. Terrorism is nothing new to this part of the world. Ageing Russian jet fighters bunkered beneath grassed over concrete hangers alongside old T-series Russian tanks were the only overt signs of the Syrian military en route. The only conversion in Damascus worth worrying about was 50 Syrian pounds to the US dollar.
Stunning array of ruins, monastries, souks and sights along the way - many highlights including the water wheels (norias) at Hama and stumbling into a christening at the 6th century Greek Orthodox monastry of St George - the last vestiges of Byzantium.
It hasn't always been easy but the finishing line is in sight....from Istanbul to Cairo, the Bosphorus to the Nile...almost there.

What a weekend, after playing my cello for the 1st time since leaving school brought back so many fond memories, how I miss my boarding school days with the girls.
Went to Kakadu yesterday with my brother and his girlfriend, it is just breattaking, I am going to miss living in Darwin when my gap year finishes, still don't know what I am going to do, I am missing all my Girls back in Europe. but not the weather.
I am going to Melbourne on Wednesday the city of my birth, it will be my 1st time back in Melb since 1992, looking forward to seeing my cousin, a week of shopping how much fun.
