I believe a fulfulling dom-sub relationship is based on mutual trust and consent and that really means respect for each other's limits. For me BDSM begins with bondage. It has been a quest to find a long term partner as well for me, but haven't yet come across anyone other than those who want to try bdsm out of curiosity (mostly because of 50 shades) or because regular sex life with their boyfriends/husbands don't excite them. For me, the experience begins with laying down several scenarios of what can be done in a bdsm session and then agreeing on a level of trust and subjugation from the sub. I love dominating, but sometimes, I let the sub try the stuff on me too. I like it spontaneous, with the pain increasing gradually till the sub cannot handle further (the safeword). And as it has often turned out in my experiences, my subs have been able to handle more than I myself could :p. Guess it's a woman's prerogative to be able to handle pain as it requires mental readiness and capacity more than physical ability to handle the pain.
