a D/s relationship is based on an unwritten contact, the leader leads, the supporter supports. The moment the supporter refuses his /her role (or similarly the leader gives up on leading), the contract, and the relationship, ends.
What kind of leverage the leader (master) has? Well, it depends on what is most valuable to the supporter (slave). Sometimes it is the relationship (if you refuse my command the relationship ends), sometimes it is something else.
