From the 1400s those who had sinned in the eyes of the community were punished in the stocks.
The stocks would be placed in the most public part of the town to ensue maximum humiliation. The sinner's neck and wrists (or sometimes feet) would be secured between two wooden block and they would remain in the stocks for anything from two hours to several days and nights even in the heat of summer or in the freezing cold of winter.
During the day the sinner would be pelted with rotten fruit and mud during the day. After dark they would frequentlt be paddled, whipped or even sodomised by other members of their community. |
