I am an older dominant, secure in who and what I am. I've held positions of authority over people for a Ling time. I'm used to being in charge and how to lead. This is not something that someone just know how to do. It takes learning how to read people, when to give orders and even more importantly when not to. More than that, it takes a genuine interest in people.
Yes, there is a heady ego rush of having power over a slave/submissive, but that can't be the sole or even major reason. If it were, then the dominant would become quite dangerous as he needs more and more proof to obtain that ego-rush. As it was written, "Beware the jabberwock, the jaws that bite, the claws that catch."
Of course, also, the fastest way to ruin a slave/submisive is to provide insufficient attention and direction, too. They depend on their dominant for those things.
These are some of the most difficult life lessons to learn, in my experience, about managing and controlling them.
Of course I'm talking about long term things. If you're looking for play dates only, thats a different kettle of knitting completely.
