As for the other side of the coin, I've been into bdsm for about 4 years, prefer to make most of my own gear, and am fairly experienced, but recognize I still have a lot to learn. I'm dominant, but I also take my subs needs into account. I enjoy learning her boundaries, and sometimes pushing a bit, but I also respect them.
