There has always been this lulling question that always begs an answer, what separates the dominant from the submissive?
The only way to find the answer is through experience, first hand knowledge of what it feels like to be in those roles. I cannot answer for a sub, but as a Dom it's simply about the power and control over another individual. Do I care? Bet your ass I do, what I take as my property is mine to protect, nourish, and foster. It is also mine to discipline, humiliate, and use as I see fit. I expect pure obedience and if there is failure there is consequence.
