My family has had the unique pleasure of hosting an exchange student from Greece over the last school year and due to the closeness of our ages, dont know if youd call a decade close, I have been treating him like a younger brother and I got to admit, he's awesome.
Anyway school is coming to a close and I invited him to hang out with a few of my friends. Big bonfire and all just relaxing. We really got to talk about the difference in our cultures and I admit I envy him for the freedoms his homeland has, ie. nude beaches. Dont get me wrong I have been to a few topless beaches in the states, but even there the people were repressed. Anyway I am getting off topic. he shared with me some of the most amazing and thought provoking sayings that have been said in Greece for a long time, acording to him. And I thought it be nice to share them here.
1. You should always buy your shoes with your eyes closed.
2. Where you hear there are a lot of cherries, bring a small basket.
3. Look with four eyes.
4. Only the mountaintops never meet.
5. It is considered exteremly bad manners to be invited to dinner and bring just your appetite.
6. The pot rolled around until it found the lid.
7. Mend your own faults, then look at mine.
8. Together we speakm but apart we understand.
9. Tell me who is your friend, and I shall tell you who you are.
10. In their village it must not be the custom to say "Thank you."
And the list goes on and on, but these were my favorites he shared and has said at times. My understanding is he got them from his grandmother. The expliantions he offered to help me understand are hilarious as well. |
