There is nothing in our culture that beckons or challenges us to strive for a higher plane of non-material fulfillment. Not that we would purge our material and physical pleasures or joys but to reach, as well, a development of the individual's talents and abilities: our senses of curiosity, wonder and awe, as well as humor, playfulness and the absurd. As a society, don't you think we need to nurture the individual's pursuit of understanding, wisdom, and the appreciation for the good and the beautiful - as opposed to just specific, factual, technical and practical knowledge. It is neither fostered in schools nor in the media. In fact, we are bombarded with images of material goals. |
