| Being a slave is not a choice, it is an identity, just like being the dominant or owner cannot be a choice, but instead constitutes inherent identity. Putting the person first, then the sexual disposition second (as can be heard many times in the BDSM-community) implies choice. However this assumption is flawed in three ways: First, it contains a category error by labeling owner and slave equally as person, implying equal footing (which cannot be the case). Secondly it creates an artificial barrier between the person and it´s assumed "role": Depending on the respective disposition that role is supposedly either that of the dominant, or that of the submissive. Thirdly, it reduces human interaction based on hierarchy to a vehicle to increase sexual or erotic sensation, when in fact it goes far beyond that.
Just like no one would ask a car to assume the role of a toaster, neither the dominant can assume his/her role as dominant, nor can the slave assume it´s role as a slave. The owner is the superior not by choice, but by inherent identity. Likewise for the slave. The slave is not a person in the role of a slave, it is a slave, no less, and no more.
Who is owner and who is slave is not decided by coincidence, but by superiority, by different degrees of worth, rank, standing, etc. The rules of modern society dictate equal footing, assuming this would best suit human nature. But instead of equality, inequality is the rule of the day. Historically speaking, an egalitarian society is a mere footnote compared to the timespan during which human interaction was governed by hierarchy, by a ranking assigned to humans based on superiority or inferiority relative to each other.
A society based on hierarchy carries a negative connotation. There seems to be an agreement that those on the upper echelons of the hierarchy exploit those below them. Yet it is the owner who gives a home to the slave, a place to stay, gives the slave purpose in life. The owner is the agency that gives. The misconception arises from not understanding that taking can just as well be an act of giving. If the purpose of a slave is to serve, to not let it serve would mean denying the slave it´s first and foremost purpose in life.
