If I don't/can't respect the Dom(me) I'm with as a person then it is unlikely I will submit to them. Friendship and mutual understanding should come first, before everything else. It's important to me. Without that basis there then it's just not going to happen.
I am a strong willed, intelligent and very independent person. But sometimes I just need to... submit and hand over my control.
