'the golden ass', aka 'metamorphoses', written by lucius apuleius in the second century, is the only latin work of fiction to have survived into the present day in its entirety.

it tells the story of lucius, whose fascination for sex and magic leads to his accidental transformation into an ass. he finds himself trapped in a world of ever increasing moral depravity and must suffer a series of trials and humiliations to be granted his human form again by the goddess isis.

within the text, apuleius tells the parallel story of cupid and psyche, in which psyche, like lucius, allows her curiosity to get the better of her. she is punished by being forced to wander through the world, forsaken by all, and is also delivered from her misfortune through a series of trials ~ the labours of venus.

if hollywood ever picks it up, the trailer will sound something like this...

"Curiosity is an EVIL master! A beautiful princess has a husband she can never see. He visits her only in the dead of night. When curiosity overcomes her, she discovers who he really is, only to be CRUELLY abandoned. Now Psyche must begin an IMPOSSIBLE task: to find her husband, even descending to the very depths of HELL in her search!
