About Faramir
I'm a behavioral scientist in public policy. My identity as a scientist is a large part of who I am--I'm trying to solve difficult & persistent problems to help make the world a better place. Another huge part of my identity is as a US Marine. I spent 15 years as a Marine--I'm not a war hero or anything, but rather my performance of masculinity reflects my acculturation and commitment as a Marine.
I'm passionate about physical fitness and preparedness, and have a rigorous commitment to physical training. Three days a week strength training, and two days a week HIIT, are the base for my general preparedness. On top I layer training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I love BJJ--love the physical and mental challenge of outthinking and outfighting your opponent.
In general I live a very disciplined, focused life. In addition to my research at work, I dedicate time to independent work, and publish regularly in my fields. I don't skip physical training sessions, and I'm careful about my diet. While I do take leisure and downtime, that comes after I've fulfilled my personal commitments to being productive.
That being said, it's not all work and regimen. I love to cook, and while I'm moderate about it, I love wine. I really like dry, medium to full bodied reds, or more tannic reds with fatty foods. I also like dry, rounder white wines, particularly malolacticly fermented whites. I love NFL football (Pats fan), and I've watched one television show in the last 25 years: The Walking Dead. I definitely dig zombie stuff :) I'm overall pretty nerdy--I like comic books, Batman especially because his superpower is being the smartest guy in the room, combined with incredible toughness and uncompromising ethics. And I like video games, I do cosplay, that sort of stuff.
My core principle as a person is the Kantian edict to treat other human being as "means and not ends." It's in Jesus' teachings, you can find it in Lao Tzu, it's part of Buddhism and it's in the Talmud. It's the core of what it means to be human: that we recognize our own humanity in other's humanity. |
