Is it fear, is it training, is it tradition, is it culture? Reason one person is obedient to another is as diverse as the world we live in. My perspective follows...The dictionary defines obedience as 'compliance with an order, request, or law or submission to another's authority'. There is compliance for sure, and there is an order. To submit to another's authority can be for may reasons - driven by respect for some and to some, by fear for others and to others, caused by cultural upbringing in family and in society, and by so-called taboo's of normal society - the act of a human being submitting to another, in order to derive purpose for its life. It is this last one that, to me, defines this word in its entirety. To give up control of oneself, to put in another's hand and in their power, for that divine being to humiliate and to reward, to punish and to allow pleasure, is the true definition of obedience. It does not come from fear, or from cultural or societal norms. Does it come from respect? Perhaps. Or, is there perhaps another reason for one being to be completely obedient to another, voluntarily, joyously?More truly, obedience comes from utter selfishness on the part of the obedient. The being that voluntarily serves and submits, hence is obedient, does that not out of fear, but because it is fulfilling a need deep in itself, and deriving purpose in life. It finds its opposite, and attracts to it. When a child is obedient to its parents, it is an act of selfishness, is it not - parents provide for the child. When a tradition or a culture teaches obedience, it is an act of selfishness, is it not - on the part of the authority. After all, we are all human beings and are all selfish, so why should being obedient be any different.What does being obedient mean? Do as you are told, you say? Definitely. And then, do some more.
