Slavery comes in many shapes and sizes. In 70 BC a slave was born under the house of a Roman knight Publius Volumniua Eutrapelus. She was of course never his lover, but his loyal house servant and also was a well known actress with his permission in Roman Theater. She was also taught by another slave to read as her Master enjoyed poetry but could not read. She was trained in various arts and skills to please her Master through service.
Later in her life she was freed, she then did take on lovers and eventually married. She however in her freedom did take on the name Volumnia from her Master by choice as she felt he was honorable.
