What is protocol? Below are some of my opinions and basic thoughts on this, it just scratches the surface and indeed is more of a conversation starter than anything else. I will happily talk with those who have experience, want experience or would like to discuss aspects of this topic. Like anything with our lifestyle opinions vary, there is no "One Great Truth" to be found. It is a personal and individual experience and learning process
You hear the words "Old Guard", "High Protocol" "Gorean" cast about but what are they?
Protocol is a specialized set of behaviors or rules that govern a certain situation or occasion. You have a set order for how you are to behave and that order is your protocol.
Old Guard, most recognize Old Guard as the culture that was created and thrived in the Gay Leather style of the late 50's, 60's and 70's fairly strict rules, discipline and traditions but no set defining of how it was to be practiced.
High Protocol at its simplest is complete adherence to a set of protocols. There is no unified set or complete list of protocols. Protocols can be and are different for everyone. There are some that are more universally accepted. If you were to attend a High Protocol event or dining in, the host should make available a guide for the protocols to be used and the expectation is that they would be followed 100% of the time.
Gorean, it seems there is much confusion of the difference between Protocol and Gorean. I personally think it is because some of the actions seem the same, formalized rules, specified positions etc. But the true difference is in the base philosophy, the reason for the rules. Gorean does not emphasis sexuality, a Gorean master will punish his slave not for sexual fulfillment (Sadism) but because the slave did something wrong and the punishment was to correct it. So while many of us in this community gain some type of sexual fulfillment, whether as a Sadist, masochist or however we are labeled those that are Gorean would not (or at least they are not doing it for that reason).
