Many seem to be overwhelmed by the number of people who are less than sincere or financially motivated. Understandably so. I beleive the dynamic which transpired may be influnced by what I've noticed in my own urban area: several years ago, New York had red light districts, pimps and pros on certain out of the way corners of the city. There was no need to walk or drive in those areas because the only business going on was in the flesh or drug trade. As business and residential areas expanded, each community wanted their respective blocks to be free of this. Pressure was put on local government and subsequently, the police to handle the mess. Back then, gorgeous escorts, clothed in nothing but a peignoir, an expensive fur, and stunning heels would be lined along Central Park, just across from the Plaza and Waldorff. Those were the first to disappear and many resorted to online avenues. The seedier areas were eventually cleared as well, but many from there dispersed to strip clubs and the girls merely stripping were now at a loss because these pro girls were willing to provide something.... (ahem) extra.
Many of these hustlers had no idea the realm of kink was so vast. Suddenly, the mentality became- hey, why don't I get paid for this anyway? And there began the spiral into the abyss, with new hopefuls simply assuming this is about money and financial abuse, rather than a balance and understanding of yourself and others, a spiritual awakening, a chance to face your repressed impulses and still feel safe. No, that wasn't stressed or expressed, and somewhere in the span of time, so much became bastardized, twisted, and lost in translation to many. It's quite sad actually. Many who seek are now faced with the task of weeding out the con artists, as well as those who have no clue how psychologically deep this resonates with the sincere.
On the positive side, mainstream marketing is gradually bringing kink out of the closet through fashion, television, movies, and songs. Magazines you'd find on coffee tables feature cover titles explaining kink can maintain your relationship or help free your creativity. It's becoming less of the dirty, shameful secret which once was too taboo to mention.
Mind you, there are some who fancy financial domination, and for them, it works, but I believe there is a disparity in the number of people who find gratification in that and seek something more profound and even soul-stirring. Something that comes with exploration, and has nothing to do with finances. I will have no great epiphany or turn on when I go see the accountant to pay taxes this year ;p
In time, people will become more liberated, but sadly, I do believe these greedy and misguided will always be an element to deal with. For those who are seeking, yet encounter this disappointment, stop the constant whining about what everyone already knows or has discovered. Keep your head high and resolve strong. Drink that extra coffee and put on your highwaters to wade through the muck in order to find that true diamond, instead of settling for fool's gold. Best of luck!
