For those that do not have a pic on their profile, why be surprised if somone asks you for a pic fairly early in the conversation? There has to be some sort of attraction and seeing what someone looks like is part of that.
Also, fakes tend not to have pics of people with their clothes on, so receiving a nice, clothed face pic acts as a kind of verification as well.
