In an article titled,, the New York Times is reporting that between 2006 and 2008, an estimated 82 American citizens were detained and considered for deportation. In all cases, those detained apparently fit the profile of potential illegal aliens. Not surprisingly, these American citizens did not walk around with their birth certificates or other documents that proved their citizenship. While it might be understandable that the government could mistake these American citizens for illegals what is puzzling and worrisome is the amount time, in some case, it took the government to correct it’s mistake.
According to the article, apparently the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration database is not capable of sorting out some American citizens from illegal aliens. In some of the cases mentioned in the article, the government made no attempt to verify the wrongly detained American citizens’ identity. Those detained had to seek outside help. The article indicates that those detained, while legal citizens of the United States, were detained because of their physical appearance. We seem to be not that far from a time when those labeled as terrorists could come from all ethnic backgrounds, if the issue of picking up and detaining legal American citizens is not resolved, we may all find ourselves in a pickle not of our choosing.
