It is with deep sadness to announce we lost one of our ferrets this morning. He was around 7 years of age. He died from a ruptured gastric ulcer in his sleep.
Below is a letter to ferret world we wrote in memory of his legacy to educate ones of this silent killer ferrets commonly have.
The letter states:
I wonder if you could post something in one of your newsgroups for us.
I wanted to tell you of the other man of the house. His name was gizmo, and by our count he was at least 7. We bought him at a pet shop a couple of years ago. We knew he was older than the other ferrets.
We had brought our first ferret, named Nibbles to find a mate. There were three ferrets in the cage all males. Two of them were more interested in trying to get off her harness, but Gizmo walked over and pulled them off of her. It was love at first sight.
About 6 months later, we adopted our third ferret, another female, Sinful Honey. She was a little young to be away from her mother and not totally on solid food. He literally chewed up her ferret food into smaller bites to help her eat. Later on, she would chew on his ears and lick them and that was her way of showing how much she loved him.
So that was our world for the last year and a half. three beautiful happy ferrets who loved one another.
But little did we know a silent killer was in our midst. Something was stalking Gizmo. We had noticed every once in a while a pile of mucus in the stools. It wasn't the ECE and we knew this and it would go away almost as fast as it appeared. He showed no signs of distress. He played with the girls and showed he was completely healthy.
Yesterday, he went out for a normal trip to the playpen. had a nice romp with the girls before we said goodnight. This morning around 8 Am he passed quietly in his sleep. I found him when I woke up a couple of hours later. Around him was some more of the mucus, and it was clear he suffered some sort of hemmorage inside.
From our vet and all of our research, we know he passed away due to a ruptured gastric ulcer. The silent killer had been stalking him for over a year and there were few warning signs. His stools were mostly healthy although he had a more sensitive stomach than the girls. He would tire out quicker on play but we always attributed it to him being a lot older than the girls.
Gizmo before he came to us we know was a breeder. I know he must have produced some wonderful litters because he was great with honey who was a baby when we got him.
I want to know if you can post this and also list more of the warning signs of gastric ulcers for others. I know this is one of the leading killers of ferrets.
This is Gizmo's legacy to educate the rest of the world of this killer sickness. I hope we can find a way to prevent them in the future.

Well, it finally happened. She pushed too many buttons on spending way too much on a trip, among almost bankrupting us. She could not be taught how to keep to a budget if her life depended on it.
Part of me still loves and wants her back, but at the same time, it was overdue. She had become too distant, the communication was not there, and that led to multiple fights per day.

Long time since I wrote. Happy anniversary for Ayperi being down here over a year. 1 year since i quit smoking.
The holidays are coming up again. This year will be hardest on sabrina after losing her father early spring. Time seems to fly now.

Really beginning to hate arthritis. It has its good days and its bad. 4 aleve are a good friend at times to knock out the pain.
I did not plan to retire at age 36. I had hoped to teach another 20 years +. That still might be possible, but damage to the nerves and tendons from the same shoulder being blown out twice in 8 years has been tough to deal with at times. Even if the shoulder is replaced, it may not matter. But at least I am settling down with two very beautiful girls.

So what all has happened of late?
Sabrina's world was rocked by the sudden death of her father at the beginning of April. He died almost instantly from a heart attack. Needless to say it has been a long month.
Ayperi leaves for home for 3 weeks in May. It will be a relaxing break for her seeing her family.

10 days until I turn 36. It's ironic when you have spent your teen years and adult life suffering from heart murmurs and begging Goddess to finish the mission on Earth that began so long ago. I was but a mere 13 year old when I had that mild heart attack that opened my eyes and taught me so much.
22 years 4 months later, who would have ever thought the journey i have seen. If someone asked me what my main goal was, it would have been to see age 25, let alone age 30. I never expected to see either age. Yet, the battle-scarred old war horse is still here. Ironic.. For so many years I begged Goddess to end my mission and the pain inside my heart and bring me back to the starts. Instead, she did one better bringing the brightest stars into my life. My only wish now is to live long enough to see my kids one day grow up, marry, and go to college and become adults. I think I will see just that.
From the first journey, back then with the heart attack, going through being widowed at age 18, all of the hurt and pain one could possibly see, helping so many others as a special victims unit councelor for the lifestlye. All of it was worth it in my long career. And as I pass the torch on mentoring to the next generation finally and settle down to enjoy my life in semi-retirement, i do it with a head heald high knowing how much I accomplished, and the number of people I helped.
I would not change any of the experience this time visiting the world from the stars for anything in the world. Older, a lot more wiser than the young boy i once was. A lot more seasoned I think.

It has been 5 months since Ayperi moved to us. These have been the best days of my life and Sabrina's.
A lot has happened also. Three weeks in after Ayperi moved down here, we saw Hurricane Ike hit with category force 4 winds coming ashore. He hit us with 100 + mph winds for over 20 hours, before finally clearing mid day. A little water damage but it was enough to open eyes. One of our cats saved the apartment jumping on the bed waking us to a broken window above us and the water coming in from 6 points in the apartment. For the next 12 hours the girls and I worked to save the apartment, and we managed to do so with light damage.
3 months later, although tarps still cover most of the roofs in our area, and many fast food and restaurant signs are still down, we have moved on and much stronger than ever.
We have 5 cats, three ferrets, commonly called the kitty bunch on myspace. The bonds are strong and getting much stronger by the day. Sure there are a few cat fights but we all work them out and everything is fine after.
Happy 22nd birthday by the way Ayperi. It was a little late returning from a vacation back home but worth every bit of it on having you in our arms.
