Inspector’s Pay

London Police Forces; The Metropolitan Police and City of London Police,along with those British Transport Police officers stationed in London,recieve in excess of 6 grand extra each year in addition to the rates shown above,excluding overtime.

The pay scale for an Inspector ranges from £41,034 (£42,834 in London) for a newly promoted Inspector to £44,508 (£46,320) for an Inspector with three completed years of service in rank.

Flexible Working Conditions
The normal working week is 40 hours on a shift basis. Shift patterns vary between forces. All ranks below superintendent are entitled to two rest days a week and compensation if required to work over those two days. They are also entitled to leave or compensation in lieu of public holidays.

Pensions
Our pensions scheme offers generous benefits, with the option of transferring previous pensions to our scheme. It’s also worth noting that police officers are contracted out of the earnings related part of the State Pension Scheme, so National Insurance contributions are paid at the lower, contracted out rate.

               AGREEMENT REACHED IN THE CHIEF OFFICERS COMMITTEE 

 

1.                  The Chief Officers’ Committee meeting on 12 February 2004, saw agreement  reached on a new Chief Officers’ pay and conditions package. At the Chief Officers’ Committee meeting held on 14 April 2005 the parties to that agreement agreed on salary levels for the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of the City of London Police. Details are set out in the attached memorandum.

 

2.                  The contents of this PNB Circular* will be promulgated in a Home Office  circular. In due course the relevant Secretary of State/Minister will make formal determinations.

MEMORANDUM

 

The following agreement reached in the Chief Officers’ Committee is submitted for the approval of the Secretary of State for the Home Department.

 

 

Agreed salary levels for the Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of the City of London Police appear in the attached annex.

City of London Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner

 

The City of London Commissioner will be paid £137,000 with effect from the 1 September 2004, (£133,000 from the 1 September 2003) and the Assistant Commissioner should be paid £113,000 with effect from the 1 September 2004, (£110,000 from the 1 September 2003). The higher figures take account of the general 3% increase from September 2004 agreed with PNB. These pay levels are subject to future pay negotiation with the PNB Chief Officers’ Committee.

Once approval has been given, it will be promulgated in Home Office, Scottish Executive Justice Department and Northern Ireland Office circulars. In due course, the relevant Secretary of State will make a formal determination for pay.

The April 2003 PNB Agreement on the pay and conditions of Chief Police Officers outlined in PNB Circular 04/05 included protected salaries for certain Chief Officers.

 

The protection only applies while the Chief Officer is in post as shown below, with their successors being paid in accordance with the new pay structure shown in the main body of this circular.

1.         Pay

 

            To increase salary rates for federated ranks as set out in Annexes A, B, C and D.

 

 

2.         Dog handler’s allowance

 

To increase the annual rate of this allowance from £1,815 to £1,869 with effect from 1 September 2005.

 

3.         Competence Related Threshold Payment

 

To increase the annual rate of this allowance from £1,032 to £1,062 from 1 September 2005.

 

4.         PSNI Allowance

 

To increase the annual rate of this allowance from £2,655 to £2,736 with effect from 1 September 2005.

 

5.         Temporary non-pensionable supplement for inspectors and chief inspectors in the PSNI

 

            Consideration of the temporary non-pensionable supplement for inspectors and chief inspectors in the PSNI has been deferred until the next meeting of the Federated Ranks Committee in October 2005.
