Perhaps what has gone wrong is that slaves are asked to make a decision about something they are ill-equipped to handle... choosing a master. On the other hand, how many masters today are prepared to take possession of a slave with all the responsibilities without any idea what they are getting? I imagine that being naked, shackled, and put on display was nerve-wracking. There was the humiliation of being examined, inside and out, by prospective owners who come to acquire property. And one knows nothing of their intent, their need, their circumstances. And then, someone has paid the redemption. There would be an intoxicating mixture of relief to have been chosen, and fear of what lies ahead. And the the nauseating uncertainty as one is led away, and chained in the new owners cage for the journey... somewhere. For most slaves, this was their reality. Chattel. Livestock. Slaves.

Auction Block may be only a metaphor now - for a slave that knows it is property, and a Master that needs new stock.

Then again...
