I am kitkat, formally known as sweetivorykisses and i currently reside in Central Pennsylvania. I am the 4th child, and also the youngest and the only child in the family born with a birth defect of the spine known as Spina Bifida (commonly called open back). In my case it has resulted in a form of Spinia Bifida called myelomeningocele, in which the backbone and spinal cord did not close before birth. As a result the spinal cord and its covering membranes protruded out of my back. In my case my back was closed and repaired through surgery, and that was done when I was 2 days old. There are different degrees at which the back may not close; mine was at the 4th lumbar region of the back. The damage to my back has left me unable to feel from the knees down, therefore i am unable to walk without assistance, which in my younger years i used crutches & braces, or in some cases when not walking, a wheelchair. It also has resulted in some of my muscles to be weakened, especially in my lower extremities and also including my bowels and bladder. As a result I wear adult briefs just in case of any accidents that may result. I do try very hard to prevent accidents from happening but I make no promises. So if A/anyone that wants to be with me they will have to accept everything about my disability!! I also do all of my personal care myself.
As a result of my disability i have had between 15 to 20 surgeries throughout my 35 years for varies aspects of it, one of those aspects is that a shunt (a long plastic tube) was placed from inside my skull all the way down into my stomach to drain off any excess fluids that might not drain off my brain properly. The shunt had to be revised once when I was 2 weeks old but since then I have not had a problem with it. Although I do know the signs to watch out for if it were to start giving me problems in the future.
Growing up in a family where you are the only one with a disability has not exactly been the easiest thing to do. I think in a lot of ways though it has shaped me into the person that Y/you see today. There is a significant age range of 12 years between the oldest child and myself. Because of the age differences i spent a lot of time alone, entertaining myself with music, watching TV and movies, collecting unicorns, spending time talking on the phone or computer with my friends, playing games online, reading and writing erotic stories just to name a few, i also try to spend as much time as possible learning new things.
All and all i think i really have led a healthy life, compared to some people with this disability, i am truly one of the lucky ones. A lot of people that i grew up around and who have met me over the years are all really so amazed about how great i do get around despite my condition and all i can say is that it's part of my life, i don't know any other way except this. Adapting to many different circumstances is just the norm for me.
The most important thing i think i want P/people to learn about P/people with disabilities is don't judge a book by its cover, until Y/you have walked a mile in their shoes. P/people with disabilities are just as human as the next person, with minds, hearts and souls that hurt just as much as A/anyone else and W/we are just as capable of being productive and loving other P/people as A/anyone else.
If A/anyone has any questions about my disability please don't be afraid to ask!
But also if Y/you can't deal with this, Y/you can't deal with me! I am just as human as the next P/person!
Here is a list of the most commonly asked questions that P/people have asked.
